KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES, 20th February, 2020 — Several Area Speech Contests were held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to adjudge representation for St. Vincent and the Grenadines in regional and international speech contests of Toastmasters International. The three speech contests held included an International Speech Contest, an Evaluation Speech Contest and a Table Topics Speech Contest.
Distinguished Toastmaster Arlette Miller, in the recently held International Speech Contest, advanced ahead of five other competitors to secure a place at the Toastmasters’ International Division C Speech Contest that will be held in Bridgetown, Barbados on April 14th, 2020. Miller, representing the Creative Thinkers Toastmasters Club presented a 7 minute speech on the topic “Failure is a fact of life” while Shernell Hadaway of the Achievers Toastmasters Club was in 2nd position and Leanna Sutherland of the Imperial Champions Toastmasters Club placed 3rd in the International Contest.
In the Evaluation Speech Contest, Distinguished Toastmaster Arlette Miller received the judges’ nod for 1st place while Kimisha Horne of the FLOW SVG Toastmasters Club placed 2nd and Ophelia Phillips of the Achievers Toastmasters Club placed 3rd.
In the Table Topics or Impromptu Speech Contest, contestants were challenged to speak fluently in an impromptu scenario and Ophelia Phillips of the Achievers Toastmasters Club was victorious while Rayana Patrick of the Imperial Champions Toastmasters Club placed 2nd and Shaquille Lewis of the Creative Thinkers Toastmasters Club placed 3rd.
Miller and Phillips, as this year’s winners of the respective contests will advance to the Division Speech Contest in Barbados. Vincentian Toastmaster, Anika Stapleton, in 2009, after winning the Area level Contest advanced to the District Contest in Jamaica and after placing first represented St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the entire Caribbean in the Toastmasters International Worldwide International Speech Contest in Connecticut, U.S.A.
