Bahamas Opposition Leader tests positive for COVID-19

Opposition Leader of the Bahamas, Philip Davis has tested positive for COVID-19, LoopTT reports.

In a message sent from his hospital bed, the political leader of the Progressive Liberal Party said in the last six weeks over 1000 Bahamians tested positive for the coronavirus and on Sunday, he suffered a similar fate.

“I am in hospital receiving excellent care. My family and I thank you for the many prayers and well wishes we have received. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the nurses, doctors and healthcare workers who are working day and night,” he said.

The Opposition Leader is the first parliamentarian in The Bahamas to test positive for COVID-19.

On Saturday a record-breaking 133 new cases were recorded.

Late on Sunday, the Ministry of Health issued a report which said another 63 cases were recorded bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1315.

The Ministry of Health also reported on Sunday another suspected COVID-related death.

According to the Ministry: “Investigations are being conducted into the details of this unfortunate death. The death toll now stands at 18.”

There are 1105 active COVID-19 cases in The Bahamas.

Residents are being urged to adhere to all restrictions meant to slow the spread of the virus.
