NDP actively created unemployment – Sehon Marshall

Sehon Marshall, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister has made the claim that the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) actively created unemployment here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).

Marshall joined the WakeUpCall with Christal and Tha Fugitive on Tuesday (Sept. 15) and said, “during the seventeen years of the NDP, that government actively created unemployment.”

Marshall stated that it was under the NDP government that many industries and factories closed down, causing unemployment.

“It was under the NDP that the arrowroot industry closed… unemployment; sugar factory closed… unemployment,” he exclaimed.

“There was no real work to diversify agriculture, so by the time NDP was done, so many state agencies had been closed, rendering people unemployed,” Marshall added.

The Press Secretary went on to say that during the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) twenty year tenure, “not a single agency has been closed.”

“We’ve opened, we’ve created jobs. We’ve hired, we’ve expanded… police, teachers, nurses, public servants.”

“…And then adding to that we’ve had the biggest world economic crisis since the 1900’s, where nobody lost their job. While in the region other governments were laying off and globally, not a single Vincentian lost their job,” Marshall indicated, referring to the Great Recession that occurred between 2007–2009.

Marshall deduced, while speaking with a businessman recently, that the government of SVG has kept it’s economy afloat during global pandemic COVID-19, without non-monetary contributions from foreign nations.

“And that is phenomenal,” he affirmed.
