Lawyer Keisal Peters has been appointed Senator and Minister of State with responsibility for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This was announced by Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Ralph Gonsalves this (Wednesday Nov. 18) morning.

Dr. Gonsalves explained that he has taken on the portfolio of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and so needs help.

“In the case of Foreign Affairs, I want to be able to have somebody as Minister of State, because Foreign Affairs has a lot of travel, some of it, of a level which the prime minister need not attend. So I have somebody of a ministerial status.”

“…In any event,” Gonsalves continued, “even when you have a full minister, the prime minister has to okay the major initiatives in foreign affairs, so I’m having someone as a Senator and Minister of State.”

Speaking on NBC Radio, Gonsalves said, “I was determined to have a young woman, I was determined to have a child of the education revolution and I was determined to have someone from within one of the three Kingstown seats.”

“The person is a 34-year-old professional woman, a lawyer of over 10 years standing, Keisal Melissa Peters on the West Kingstown side of Campden Park. She has been working for the past nine to ten years as a Lawyer in the Elizabeth Chambers, headed by Stalky John,” Dr. Gonsalves announced.

“I considered in all the circumstances that Keisal Melissa Peters or KMP as I call her for short, is suitable.”

“…The date of her instrument, is dated the 16th of November, which is Monday and she would be appointed as the Minister of State with effect from the 30th.”

Peters will make her oath of allegiance on November 30, 2020, when Parliament opens here in SVG, for the first time since the November 5 General Elections.
